Choosing a Cotton Toy: Materials, Stitching and Care

Cotton toy care: read the label, hand wash only with mild detergent, protect hand stitching, check wool details, dry fully in shade and inspect before play.

A cotton toy can become a familiar little companion: a dinosaur in an imaginary jungle, a dog tucked into a travelling bag, or a character in a bedtime story. Choosing one starts with its personality, but it is worth looking closer at the fabric, the filling and the stitches that hold it together.

This guide explains what to look for when choosing a cotton toy and how to approach its care. We use Mysa’s Bozo Dog and Dino Dinosaur as examples, with material and washing details confirmed by the Mysa team. Always check the details of the particular toy you are buying.

Start with the fabric—and ask what is inside

“Cotton toy” is a useful starting point, but it does not necessarily describe every component. Read the outer-fabric and filling details separately. A cotton outer can be paired with a different filling, and the care instructions need to suit the whole toy, including any embroidery or embellishments.

Mysa’s Bozo Dog Toy and Dino Dinosaur Toy both list cotton fabric and cotton filling. Mysa uses azo-free dyes and block printing. Some tails and tassels may contain wool fibres, so a cotton body does not mean that every decorative detail is cotton. Their product descriptions also explain that they use excess fabric from Jaipur’s textile factories, brought into a new form by rural women artisans.

With upcycled fabric, patterns can vary from one piece to another. If a particular colour or print matters for your gift, ask about the available piece before ordering. Look for a clear explanation of where the material comes from rather than relying on a broad “eco-friendly” label.

Look closely at the stitching

A handmade toy invites you to notice the small details. Look at the seams around its body and the places where ears, legs or a tail join it. The edges should be joined securely, without open gaps or exposed filling. Check these areas again as the toy is used and after cleaning.

Bozo and Dino are described as hand-stitched, with hand-embroidered eyes. Embroidery gives their faces character. Mysa’s toys are hand-stitched, so gentle washing matters: wash gently by hand and avoid heavy or vigorous washing. Handmade details still need care and occasional inspection.

If you find an opening seam, loose attachment or exposed filling, set the toy aside and contact the maker about repair before returning it to use.

Match the toy to its recipient

Consider who will receive the toy, how they will use it, and whether its size and details suit them. For a child’s gift, check the stated age guidance and any warnings for that specific product. Cotton fabric or embroidered features alone do not establish an age recommendation or safety certification. If the listing leaves you unsure, ask before buying.

There is a practical side to gifting, too: can the recipient’s household follow the care routine? A gentle wash and enough time to dry fully are worth planning for before the first muddy adventure.

How to wash and care for a Mysa cotton toy

Mysa recommends hand washing only for all products, without exception. For these hand-stitched cotton toys, use mild detergent and wash gently rather than using a heavy or vigorous wash. Do not machine wash. Some tails and tassels may contain wool fibres; check the instructions for the particular toy and ask us if you need advice about these details.

  1. Read the care instructions first. Check the details for your particular toy before washing.
  2. Hand wash only. Wash gently by hand with mild detergent. Avoid heavy or vigorous washing that pulls at hand stitching.
  3. Pay attention to tails and tassels. Some contain wool fibres; check any item-specific care guidance.
  4. Dry in shade. Let the toy dry completely before it returns to play or goes into storage.
  5. Inspect before play. Set the toy aside if seams open, threads loosen or filling becomes exposed, and contact Mysa about repair.

A short checklist before you choose

  • Are both the outer material and the filling described?
  • Are the seams and attachments secure?
  • Is the age guidance clear for the intended recipient?
  • Can you follow the washing and drying instructions?
  • Does the maker explain any variations in colour or pattern?
